How ta get ta the Emporium
  • Emporium now has a ramp

the emporium is now accessible on both levels by wheelchairs. the shop front already had a from-street ramp, but we have now installed one further in which takes you to the small second level in the space. the incline is quite steep, please be warned, and unfortunately the toilet which we fixed up is not a big space, and there are no handles. we would love any feedback, input and advice as to how to make the space more accessible to anyone. please email!

Mechanised Man till the 12th of December

Thomas Dowdeswell: Opens Friday 4th December
Thomas Dowdeswell: Opens Friday 4th December
“The era of past industrial revolutions is characterized by the lessening or even replacing of physical labours
by some kinds of machines.  The coming era of new industrial revolutions will be characterized by the lessening
or even replacing of mental labours by some new kinds of machines”.

Wu Wen-Tsun”Some Reflections on the Mecanization of Mental Labor
in the Computer Age”  2002.

At different times since the first industrial revolution human civilisation has been forced to accept, adapt to and work with new mechanisations; in industry, in economy, in services and in social interaction.

These unfamiliar changes to the fabric of working life, socialisation and the value of the individual within society’s boundaries has provoked rebellion, dissatisfaction and fear for many but also inspiration, freedom and opportunity for countless others.

This series of artwork attempts to explore the mechanisation of the westernised 21st century human; the gadget generation and how the individual attempts to renegotiate his/her own identity within the group ethos.
